This gorgeous South Beach, Miami art deco hotel on Ocean Drive is the brightest on the street. Of all the photos I took while vacationing there, the one I took of this view is my favourite, since the lighting and reflections are amazing and it has such a lively feel, I knew it would make a great painting. You can almost hear the commotion of pedestrians and cars as they enjoy a night out.

Playing with colour and line within this fantasy image was as therapeutic as it was challenging for me, as it is a break from my usual style and choice of subject matter. The client didn't give me many restrictions beyond "purple unicorn," so I began with an older, unfinished floral painting that had been hanging around the studio, and then brought the unicorn up in layers overtop. The unicorn is not located anywhere in particular in time or space. Not everything in life has to be as linear as we make it: I would encourage you to take time today to have fun and make nonsense.
