The couple dancing may represent the love between a man and woman, but may also represent the love of God towards His people, so the viewer may find a variety of meanings within the imagery in the painting. Here are three scriptures which highlight some of the symbols within this piece: walking on water, sparrows, and the love of one person towards another.
" 'Lord, if it’s you,' Peter replied, 'tell me to come to you on the water.' 'Come,' he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. (Matthew 14:28-29 NIV)"Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." (Luke 12:7 NIV) "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV)
